Shaq O’Neal’s spending record at Walmart led concerned American Express to call him

Shaquille O’Neal’s spending at WalMart was so high it led to his concerned bank calling him up only for him to see what was going on.

Shaq is one of the biggest names in the NBA, while he was quite literally one of the biggest players, standing at 7ft 1in, and his move from Miami Heat to Phoenix Suns in 2008 was a huge deal in 2008.

However, when he arrived in Arizona at past midnight, he was greeted to an empty apartment and O’Neal was not ready to hang around for someone to furnish it.

So he headed out to WalMart, which used to be open 24/7 in the United States, to go out and buy everything you can think of to fill up his new apartment.

And by everything, talkSPORT means everything, as he explained to James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2018.

Sitting next to Victoria Beckham, O’Neal explained: “I have the biggest purchase in Walmart history.

“$70,000. I get traded from Miami to Phoenix, and I’m the type of guy [that] I have no patience.

“So when I get to Phoenix, they have an apartment for me. Nothing’s in it.”

He then listed the items he went on to purchase on a midnight WalMart splurge.

“Two or three in the morning, I gotta go get four or five TVs, I gotta go get printers, I gotta go get laptops. I gotta go get sheets, towels, underwear, t-shirts.

“So at the end it was $70,000 so I put my credit card in and it got declined. So I pulled it out.”

Shaq then stopped mid-speech to imitate rubbing his card on his chest and breathing on it to clean it before putting it back in the machine.

He went on: “I put it back in and it said declined again. So now I’m saying ‘well, I know I’m not broke.’

“So I just said ‘alright, I’ll be back’ and then the American Express security called me [and he said] ‘hey man, somebody stole your credit card and they spent $70,000 at Walmart’.

“I said ‘no that was me’, [the security guard replied] ‘what the hell are you buying for $70,000?'”

Kudos to the American Express security, though, for phoning at nearly 3am and checking in.

But the shopping spree turned out to be almost a waste of time because the four-time NBA champion did not stay long.

Just a year later and Shaq had left Phoenix Suns for Cleveland Cavaliers, where he stayed for one season.
