Sean Strickland breaks UFC belt and tries to fix it – but background distracts fans

Just days after Sean Strickland became a UFC champion, the wacky American has revealed he has already broken his belt.

Strickland dropped Israel Adesanya early and outpointed him over five rounds to pull off one of the biggest upsets in MMA history at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia on Sunday morning.

After arriving home with his £400,000 [$500,000] prize, the 32-year-old took to Instagram to reveal that he had somehow broken his belt before trying to fix it on camera.

“Guys, I already broke my belt,” Strickland admitted in his viral video.

After showing that the gold plate had become partly detached from the leather, the new UFC champion grabbed some duct tape and jokingly used it to fix the damage.

“But I have a solution. Good as new,” Strickland added while smiling at the camera.

He captioned the post: “Is it just me or did this belt just become way better?”

The video quickly gained over 120,000 likes and Strickland’s comment section was flooded with congratulatory messages and people wondering how he managed to break his belt so soon.

However, another group of people were more interested in his choice of décor, as the known gun lover was fixing his belt in front of a wall of firearms and ammunition.

One fan wrote: “Bro is preparing for the apocalypse.”

Another said: “His wall decor is exactly what you’d expect.”

Someone else commented: “Sean with heavy artillery as expected.”

A fourth person joked: “I expected more guns to be honest.”

Strickland will soon return to training ahead of his first title defence.

UFC president Dana White revealed during his post-fight press conference that a rematch with Adesanya is most likely next, but not everyone wants to see it.

Dricus du Plessis is the clear number one contender at middleweight and many people believe he should be next in line after beating former champion Robert Whittaker earlier this year.

Nothing is decided yet. Strickland will be afforded a bit of time to enjoy his ‘good as new’ belt before being booked to return in the first few months of 2024.
