Scottish boos drown out God Save the King ahead of friendly against England

The English national anthem was near inaudible ahead of the friendly clash with Scotland due to boos from the home crowd.

The ‘friendly’ between the two British rivals had a hostile edge to it before a ball was even kicked at Hampden Park.

Anyone tuning in to hear God Save the King will have been left disappointed, with Scottish boos completely obliterating the song and England players singing it.

It was a different story when the home side’s national anthem was played with those inside Hampden Park producing a spine-tingling rendition of Flower of Scotland.

There were also unsavoury scenes before kick-off during a scheduled period of silence for in remembrance of Scotland legend Craig Brown as well as the victims of the earthquake in Morocco and floods in Libya.

A smattering of England fans were heard chanting during the silence, with Scotland fans responding with boos.

Things didn’t get off to the best start for the home side, with Scotland 2-0 down at half-time thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.

An own goal by Harry Maguire midway through the second half breathed new life into the contest, however, Harry Kane’s left-footed effort sealed a 3-1 win for Gareth Southgate’s side.

Scotland could’ve had their place at Euro 2024 next summer secured had Norway drawn to Georgia in Oslo on Wednesday night but goals from Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard saw the home side win 2-1.

Steve Clark’s men have an eight-point cushion on third-placed Norway in Group A with qualification to the finals in Germany seemingly inevitable.
